I create all of my fused glass pieces by hand cutting, grinding and layering 3-6 layers of fused and dichroic glass. Each piece takes approx. 6 hours sometimes longer depending on what shapes come to mind in the final cutting. My pieces are fired the first time at 1530 degrees for 5 minutes. I then bring the kiln down to 1000 degrees quickly so as not to cause discoloring on the edges or devitrification on the glass. After I have cut the shapes and ground all the edges, I then clean the piece with alcohol and put it back in the kiln and fire at 1370 degrees for 1 minute, then again bring it quickly to 1000 at which time I turn off the kiln and let it cool completely. The final firing brings the shine back to the glass and is called fire polishing.
